Rory Stewart on the importance of opposition, plus would a super-majority pose a problem?
Переглядів 42 тис.12 годин тому
Counting down the last five days until the election results come flooding in, the Conservative Party is still blowing themselves apart from the inside. Why has the Tory campaign been such a clusterfuck and should we care if they implode? Would a Labour super majority be good or bad for democracy as a whole? To discuss these points, Nish and Coco are joined by Rory Stewart - hearing what he thin...

With just one week to go until the election, Rishi Sunak’s chances of avoiding a landslide defeat might have just got slimmer - all thanks to “gamble-gate”. Nish and Coco are joined by political correspondent Liz Bates to discuss the betting scandal plaguing the government. Sunak vowed to lead the world in “standards of decency” but has been very slow to act. Might this mean a complete wipeout ...

The polls are indicating a landslide victory for Labour come the election on July 4th. But that hasn’t stopped the calls - from both the left and the right - for citizens to vote tactically. In terms of wealth, technology, military strength and influence Russia and China are not a match for the collective 'west'. The only chance they have to contest the current international order is for us choose not to defend it. Sadly we appear to be doing exactly that. Retreating into petty nativism while screaming at each other about 'wokeness'. Oh well. If we can't get a grip, we don't deserve to remain in charge.

Sadly, the US destroyed the very international order that it built. The destruction started with Kissinger and was fully achieved with Cheney, i.e., Nixon/Bush. I can’t imagine what a second Trump reign will bring.

Correction: not the biggest economy. Not for a while now, not the real economy. That's China. The U.S. is, for now, the biggest nominal economy, but not real by a good margin even with conservative estimates.

Wealth tax on those with over ten million pounds in assets could be on a sliding scale. People like the Duke of Devonshire, etc., have such enormous assets that a fifty to a hundred million quid would hurt them not at all.

“All credit to Keir Starmer for the way he's changed the party around”….for the WORST!!! What and UNHINGED thing to say!!!! The polls show that he’s going to be the MOST unpopular Prime Minister to come into office in modern history! He’s removed the whip and/or thrown out REAL Labour MPs, and has proved himself to be just as oleaginous and self serving as the Tories! The ONLY reason Labour will get into government this time around is because of how terribly the conservative PMs (particularly the last 3) have screwed up the country! Essentially, people are voting the Tories OUT more than they’re voting Labour in!

The issue was 14 years on anti-growth politics : first austerity reduced investment from the public sector, then Brexit drove away private investment This is why the British wallet is 11,000 a year below where it should be 1. Wealth tax 1% (non on home occupied) 2. Property tax readjustment 3. Infrastructure Build (schools, hospitals, roads) 4. Housing Build to 500k (6 new cities over 20 years) 5. Specific borrowing to fund NHS pay compensation.

The point about the US causing the GFC is super important. Previously China seemed to kind of “look up” to the US in some regards economically. 08 crystallized for them the idea that the US model wasn’t necessarily better than China’s. Our credibility had suffered through the post war era but 2001-2009 really hurt us in a way that Vietnam didn’t even.

Gotta say, I was surprised by Ben's admission of guilt (US-based guilt, that is) regarding the current geopolitical mess. The US were the big winners of WWII. Apart from Pearl Harbour, the US never had to deal with either Nazi bombardments (like the UK) or land invasions (like the Soviet Union), while keeping a vibrant economy. A war economy, but still a powerful one nonetheless. The rest was like Ben described: the US stood increasingly alone at the top of this chain, but instead of using its power to secure that position, it abused it instead. The turning point was the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and the whole "war on terror" fiasco, where it flaunted its privilege position onto everyone else's face. That was indeed the point of no return. The fact that some Americans are objective enough to recognize this, it makes me hopeful, really,

I do believe that the US benefits the most out of the world order they created after WW2. I wish Americans would know that too. I also believe that this particular world order proved to be one that also benefited other nations. I know its a debatable subject. I can bring examples. But we return to that debate thing. We have Germany. And Europe in general. The Marshal plan. Prolly one of the most genius moves of all times. And we can debate about the cold war, East Germany, West Germany, AfD. Debatable. Can include here Marie le Pen and Brexit and other things. I also believe... the way McArthur handled Japan after WW2, put the foundations for the relationship not only of the US with the Asian Pacific, but also laid out a possible trail for the two theaters to help each other. I KNOW, coz it was reported in the press multiple times, about multiple details. Japan had its moment when they realized they are IN for Ukraine. Recently South Korea went the same route. I mean, North Korea is helping Russia, then South Korea is helping Ukraine. And again. Debate. I really really wish there was ... something. A comprehensive material from the other side, explaining what is the Old World Order actually is. Because, you can search and search and read and read about the New world order. And you become radicalized about any and everything American, NATO, West, progress, science, government, school, institutions, globalism, trade, free markets, human rights. If you HATE the NWO, you hate those things. for sure. My theory is that they all started somewhere in a Moscow KGB lab. Not important how it started. It is however important how to fight it. We seem to loose every day a bit more. It really isn't helping when you don't know who the other side is.

This election is really scary and confusing to me because I obviously want to be informed on politics and make an educated and authentic vote - but it literally feels impossible and pointless when women's and LGBTQ+ rights are once again being debated. It's also simply not an option for me to be involved in politics, because not only would i feel extremely uncomfortable being that ignorant; but my existence as a queer person is politized and my future is potentially in the hands of bigots who clearly want to ban people like me from certain spaces and from recieving the help and healthcare that they need, for hateful reasons they've completely made up and genuinely have no evidence to back up. i don't undertand this right wing narrative that banning teaching kids about the LGBTQ+ community is going to stop them from finding information about it, or realising that they are a member of the community. the only thing that resistance causes is shame. if you tell kids they aren't allowed to know about or talk about or interact with something they're not going to comply - they're going to find the information elsewhere (which is a massive issue because it could be misinformation) and they're just going to feel SHAME around the subject. From experience i can say that the banning of education on the topic doesn't just promote shame it also breeds hate and ultimately it will end in a mental health crisis - like it has done before. I hate thinking about it because it still feels mortifying; but me and my friends were relentlessly bullied throughout school for being queer, and it's genuinely changed my perception of the world and my relationships with people forever. It made me a very cynical and shy person, which i never was before, and has hindered me from coming out to people very close to me. It actually breaks my heart to think that my nephews and cousins and their friends could potentially grow up in a world where they fear going to school or leaving their houses because of who they are, and because their own government; the people who are meant to represent and protect them, do the exact opposite and persistently demonise and deny a community of people that already faces discrimination in every aspect of life.
